The role of a dragoon during the Napoleonic period was to engage in skirmishing, a type of combat which wore down or confused the enemy until the main line of attack could be brought up. They would also act as scouts, looking for key enemy positions or act as an advanced guard to take and hold key objectives like the high ground of a battlefield ahead of reinforcements.
