Updated Death Toll in Cairo

As an update to yesterday’s report on here on the death toll in Cairo, in which the number stood at seven deaths, the death toll has now risen to at least 49. Some of the worst violence took place in east Cairo where 46 people were killed between two neighbourhoods. More than 250 people have been injured nationwide and a further 1,079 have been arrested.

Overshadowing what the government hoped would be a day of nationalist celebration, the violence comes as General Sisi is likely to announce his run for presidency in the next few days. Based upon the people’s calling, he would likely win by a landslide.
