Discontent in the 13 colonies of North America had been brewing for some time, but in April 1775 all-out conflict broke out between the Continental Army and the British Empire. It was a war about freedom, democracy, self-determination, justice and so much more. It was also a war that gave birth to the very concept of the United States of America and the 1776 Declaration of Independence laid the foundations for the nation to come.
But how easily could all of that collapsed? Was the Continental Army under George Washington ever in danger of losing to the might of the British forces and its vast resources? And if Britain had held onto its lands in North America, what would that have meant for the region and the Empire heading into the 19th century? The War of Independence was a world-changing event, but it was far from inevitable.
In the hopes of answering some of these questions and better understanding what a world without the United States might have looked like, the All About History team spoke with historian Professor Alan Taylor, author of books such as American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804.
