Was there a chance that Operation Overlord, the Allied amphibious invasion of mainland Europe could have failed? It all began with D-Day, the beach landing on which everything hinged. While history remembers it as the turning point of WWII, it could so easily have played out differently.

From weather making landings more challenging to the placement of the tides, there were so many details that could have made D-Day more or less challenging on the day. And that’s before you even get to German preparedness for the invasion and whether or not an Allies landing in France was better or worse than attempting something similar through the Mediterranean (supposedly something Winston Churchill was in favour of doing).

To learn more about D-Day and the ways in which it could have gone wrong for the Allies, the All About History team spoke with historian Jonathan Trigg, author of books such as D-Day Through German Eyes. You can listen to our conversation now in episode 2 of Almost History: The What If Podcast from All About History.
