What would have happened if a young Prince Henry, heir to the throne of England and son of Henry VII had died young? The question isn’t a particularly outrageous one. The prince who would become Henry VIII was not supposed to inherit the throne from his father. That duty was expected to land on his older brother, Arthur, who passed away not long after marrying Catherine of Aragon.
In an era when pandemics were not uncommon and accidents could be fatal, a young Henry could easily have fallen sick or been injured while out hunting and that could have been the end of the Tudor dynasty before it even started. And what would that have meant for the fate of England? More civil wars? A new dynasty emerging?
To answer all of these questions the All About History team turned to historian Elizabeth Norton who has written extensively on the lives of Henry VIII’s wives and life in Tudor Britain. You can listen to our conversation now in episode 1 of Almost History: The What If Podcast from All About History.
